hamsters or loaves and fishes?

Having now survived final papers for the semester, I’ve been tearing around (most unmonastically) getting packed. What am I forgetting?!

Mosquito net, check.
Bug spray and sunscreen, check.
Pepto pills and malaria meds, check.
Summer habits and cargo pants, check.
Some idea of what I’ll be doing once I get there, not so much.

Into the fray comes this evening’s Gospel reading at Solemn Vespers: Luke 9:1-17.

“Jesus said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic.” (9:3)

All this and the multiplication of the loaves and fishes too.

Time to stop running around like a hamster on a wheel and breathe in God’s peace as I go.

Your mission trip will no doubt give new life and meaning to the Scriptures you have quoted, for sure!

  2. All shall be well, all shall be well, all manner of things shall be well.

Julian of Norwich has come to my rescue more than once when I was running on that hamster wheel. You are right: get off the wheel and trust to God for the rest. All shall be well.

Go in peace, Sarah, and return to us with joy through the power of the Holy Spirit. You will be in my prayers while you are in Haiti, and I look forward to having time to share our adventures when we both get home!

Hey Sarah... prayers for safe travels! I miss you already...

Personally, I feel like the hamster who has another hamster dude jump on her wheel and although I decide to get off, the dude keeps running sending me flying around in circles anyway. :)

Hope your wheel slows down enough that you realize that you're doing something that makes a difference.

    Well spoken, Suzanne!

I have always been comforted by that famous quote by Dame Julian, and her spirit accompanies Sr. Sarah on this journey indeed.
